Drekkanas
One third of a rasi is called Drekkana. Zodiac consists of 36 dekkanas. Each drekkana covers 10 degrees of the Zodiac, making three parts each house. The 1st part is ruled by the lord of that sign, the 2nd part is ruled by the lord of the 5th house from that of that sing and the 3rd part is ruled by the lord of the 9th house counted from that concerned house.
The drekkana lords of the movable signs are called Narada, of the fixed signs are called Agastya and of the dual signs are called durvasa.
The 1st drekkana of Simha, 2nd drekkana of Mesha, 3rd drekkana of Dhanus is ruled by Ravi.
The 1st drekkana of Karka, 2nd drekkana of Meena, 3rd drekkana of Vrischika is ruled by Chandra.
The 1st drekkana of Mesha and Vrischika, 2nd drekkana of Karka and Dhanus, 3rd drekkana of Simha and Meena is ruled by Kuja.
The 1st drekkana of Mithuna and Kanya, 2nd drekkana of Vrisha and Kumbha, 3rd drekkana of Tula and Makara is ruled by Budha.
The 1st drekkana of Dhanus and Meena, 2nd drekkana of Simha and Vrtischika, 3rd drekkana of Mesha and Karka is ruled by Guru.
The 1st drekkana of Vrisha and Tula, 2nd drekkana of Mithuna and Makara, 3rd drekkana of Kanya and Kumbha is ruled by Sukra.
The 1st drekkana of Makara and Kumbha, 2nd drekkana of Kanya and Tula, 3rd drekkana of Vrisha and Mithuna is ruled by Sani.
These drekkanas were named after Ayudha, chatushpada, Sarpa,Pakshi,Pasa and Nara.
They are also called as Soumya, Krura and Jalachara in Jatakaparijata.
In Manasagari it is said that as the planets are in their own Drekkanas, in their exalted signs, in their own Vargas, so shall the native enjoys riches, prosperity and he will be truthful.
If a planet in its own drekkana is also placed in a Kendra or Kona, the native will be prosperous and gain position and respect. He will be expert in Arts and will have good reputation. If drekkana lord is in a benefic house and connected with Sukra, Chandra or Kuja, then the native gains respect, popularity, wealth and good position.
If the lord of rising drekkana is in a Kendra, the person becomes a King, if it is in own house it makes him rich and it is in a friendly house, it gives him respect from others.
In panapara houses it makes him a king and in apoklima it gives him good children and gain through lands.
We can judge about the comforts received through brothers, the result of the journey and fulfilment of objectives, the description of the thief etc., from drekkana chart. The personality and appearance also can be studied from the Chandra’s position in the drekkana chart.
The illness and recovery also can be studied from the position of the rising drekkana.
The nature of death is also suggested by the 22nd drekkana from the rising drekkana.
The 2nd house represents Vision and speech. The persons who have their rising drekkanas in the 2nd house, they will be born orators, great musicians, Poets, religious leaders, will have soften speech, and make the people move behind them.
The 3rd house is for valour. If the rising drekkana lord is in the 3rd house, it makes the native having imbalanced mind causing sufferings from sudden fits of elevation and depression.
If the rising drekkana lord is in 6th house, the native will have struggles throughout his life and he will sacrifice his comforts for the sake of others.

Out of 36 drekkanas, 23 drekkanas are named after Ayudha, Chatushpada, Pasa, Nigala, Pakshi, Varaha and Sarpa drekkanas. If the rising drekkana being nigala, pasa or sarpa, and associated with malefics the native will have short life.
